Tenderize the chicken: Place chicken breasts (one at a time) in a large plastic bag and use a meat tenderizer or heavy bottle (I always just use olive oil) to pound. GarageBand is required to notice and record that information. That’s a measurement of how hard you struck the keys of your MIDI controller or synthesizer. MUSIC CLASS: A Different Kind of VelocityĪs you get to know GarageBand, and as you get to know the language of electronic music, you’ll encounter one term with increasing frequency: velocity or key velocity. The following pages explain these musical input methods one by one. Most, however, require a MIDI interface, a box with nickel-sized MIDI In and Out connectors on one side, and a USB cable for your Mac on the other. Some synthesizers can connect straight to your Mac with a USB cable. You can connect the keyboard directly to your Mac and use it the same way, and simply ignore the keyboard’s own sound banks. If you already own a MIDI synth-an electronic keyboard that provides an assortment of sounds and has MIDI connectors on the back-there’s no point in buying a MIDI controller. The harder you play, the louder the piano sound, for example.Ĭonnect a MIDI synthesizer. It draws its power directly from your USB jack, so you don’t need a power adapter, and it’s velocity-sensitive, which means that its keys are touch-sensitive. If you can live with 49 keys, it’s a very nice keyboard. It makes music only when it’s plugged into, for example, a Mac running GarageBand.Īpple sells (or, rather, resells) a MIDI controller for $100 called the M-Audio Keystation 49e. That’s the point of a MIDI controller it looks and feels like a synthesizer keyboard, but produces no sounds of its own. All you really need is one that can trigger them. It’s an electronic language that lets musical equipment and computers communicate over a cable.īecause your Mac is perfectly capable of playing any of hundreds of musical-instrument sounds (like the ones built into GarageBand), you don’t really need an electronic keyboard that can produce sounds. MIDI (pronounced “middy”), you may recall from Chapter 1, stands for musical instrument digital interface. Still, at least you can play chords this way, and you can use your fingers instead of the mouse.Ĭonnect a MIDI controller. ![]() You don’t get much expressive capability, since pressing the letter keys harder or softer doesn’t produce any difference in sound. A great new feature of GarageBand 2 turns your regular typing keyboard into a musical keyboard. Unfortunately, it’s very clunky it’s like playing a piano with a bar of soap.īut it’s free, it’s built-in, and it’s handy for inputting the occasional slow solo line or very brief musical part. Until Apple invents a 10-button mouse, however, this onscreen keyboard limits you to playing only one note at a time. That is, click the keys of GarageBand’s own, built-in, onscreen piano keyboard. If your rhythm wasn’t perfect, so what? No human being’s rhythm is perfect (at least compared to a computer’s), not even that of rock star millionaires. If you played a wrong note, no biggie-just drag it onto a different pitch, or delete it altogether. If you made it through Chapter 1, you now know that these regions contain MIDI information (that is, note data that you can edit). Other people ignore the loops altogether and play all of the parts themselves, one instrument at a time, using GarageBand as a multitrack “tape recorder.”Īnything you record like this shows up in green GarageBand regions. ![]() For example, some people use GarageBand’s loops to create a rhythm section-a backup band-and then they record a new solo on top. Either way, the cool part is that you can combine your own performances with GarageBand’s other tools. ![]() To generate the notes that GarageBand records, you can play either an external musical keyboard or an onscreen one. It can record your live keyboard performances, whether you’re a painstaking, one-note-at-a-time plunker or a veteran of Carnegie Hall. If you have some semblance of musical chops, though, GarageBand can quickly take you to the next level of creativity. As you know from the previous chapters, GarageBand’s loops can provide hours of fun and profit even if you don’t have a lick of musical training. A new track will appear in the window, and again you can open the Audiofile Processor by clicking on the track name. You can also drag sampled sounds into the Beat/Bassline editor (Figure 4). The remaining modes provide an eraser tool and a detuner for fine adjustments to the pitches of your samples. You can alter the pitch location and note length, and switching the cursor mode will let you select events for editing by group. When the cursor is in Draw mode you can add note events to the piano roll. Left-click the track name to open the designated instrument - it should be the Audiofile Processor for soundfiles - then double-click in the track itself to open the piano roll editor. Drag a file from your samples collection into a track in the Song Editor (Figure 2) and that sample is now available for playing via the Piano Roll (Figure 3) window. You can import whole recordings into LMMS, whether they're sample loops or entire pieces. LMMS lets the user enter the composition process at various levels. Figure 1 shows off LMMS in its default appearance with a loaded project, though you can change the program skin and its background image via the Settings dialog in the Edit menu. ![]() Start LMMS either by invoking it at a terminal prompt or by clicking on its menu icon. ![]() The system is fully equipped to test LMMS in a variety of configurations for different audio devices, including a consumer-grade soundcard, a pro-audio interface board, and a virtual MIDI ports system. For the record, I built the latest version of LMMS (0.4.4) on an Ubuntu 9.04 system empowered with a Linux kernel patched for realtime operation. The Edit menu's Settings dialog provides controls for LMMS's internal buffer size and selection panels for your audio and MIDI devices. See the LMMS documentation wiki for more information on installing LMMS from its sources.Īfter LMMS has been installed you'll need to configure it for best performance on your hardware. Building LMMS isn't difficult, but the process is beyond the scope of this article. If you want the latest and greatest you'll need to download the source code and compile it yourself. Alas, most distributions are likely to have only an older package for LMMS. If you're using a mainstream distro just open your package manager, search for LMMS, and let the manager do its job. ![]() Most Linux distributions include LMMS in their normal repositories. I'll have more to say about those features and others, but first let's find out where you can get LMMS and how you can install it. The DAW includes track-based automation for gain and plugin parameters, and a 64-channel effects mixer with support for LADSPA and VST plugins. LMMS combines a lightweight DAW (digital audio workstation) with editors for the composition of musical material, including a beat/bassline editor, a piano-roll window for writing MIDI parts, and a song editor for organizing your materials into larger forms. In this mini-review we'll see if LMMS lives up to the precedents set by those programs. ![]() Their GUIs invite involvement in the process of making music and it's clear that the designers want the user to have fun with the program and the process. Their feature sets include preset audio loops, MIDI tracks, and other ready-made musical materials available for immediate use in a piece. Those programs are designed to streamline the process of making music with a computer in order to get new users into music composition as quickly and painlessly as possible. LMMS is music creation software similar to programs such as GarageBand for OSX and FL Studio for Windows. The purchasing price of the wood, auxiliary materials and semi-finished products is $400 per closet and make up the variable costs. The fixed costs average $210,000 per year (monthly labour costs, energy costs, interest and depreciation costs). It would be a good idea for the director to first consider certain data before he decides to start production of the closet. The closet is almost two metres high, 1.50 metres wide and 0.5 metres deep. ![]() It’s a Bohemian model of rough, white-washed woos with two doors and a drawer at the bottom. The previously mentioned carpentry business is planning to make a new closet. See the picture below for the Break-Even Point formula:īreak Even Point = fixed costs / ( selling price – variable costs ) When the fixed costs are divided by the contribution margin, you get the Break-Even Point. That only happens because of the so-called contribution margin the selling price minus the variable costs. The Break Even Point is determined by the moment when the fixed costs have been earned back. In order to calculate the Break Even Point within the Break Even Analysis, you need certain data, namely the fixed costs, the selling price of the product and the variable costs per product. Everything over this critical point can be booked as profit. If the turnover is lower than the total costs, it’s a loss. In that case, the organisation would break even and both the fixed and variable costs will be earned back. It is the turnover at which the total revenue would equal the total costs. In addition, you can calculate the Break Even Point (BEP), also known as the critical point. The Break Even Analysis is a handy tool to decide if a company should or should not start producing and selling a product. If they are producing 50 closets per month, they use less than when they produce 75 closets in some other month. ![]() This concerns for instance selling costs, production costs, fuel and other costs that are directly related to the production of goods or an investment in capital.įor a carpentry business, mainly the costs for raw materials, auxiliary materials, semi-finished goods such as wood, nails and copper handles, are variable. Variable costs are costs that change in direct relation to the volume of production. Think for instance of salaries, monthly energy bills and the depreciation costs of current assets (including machines) and fixed assets (such as a building). It’s about costs that come back every month and stay the same, and can only change after a year. The business has a large number of fixed costs. Fixed costs include (but are not limited to) depreciation of materials, interest costs, taxes and general overhead costs (labour costs, energy costs, depreciation costs).Ī carpentry business that mainly makes tables, chairs and closets, employs 50 people.
